Yustyna

Yustyna descends from the Latin Iustina, a feminine form built on the adjective iustus, "just, fair." The same root gave Rome the names Justin and Justinian, and it stands behind the English word justice. In Polish paperwork the name almost always appears as Justyna, its close variant, while yustyna keeps the shape a Ukrainian ear gives it.

The sense of fairness was there from the start. Early Christian tradition remembers more than one Saint Justina who carried the Latin form, and the name moved east through church calendars into Ukrainian and Polish use. Among Ukrainian families it became an everyday choice, plain and old at once.

The meaning stayed close to the root. To read Justyna on a class register is to read a small claim about fair dealing, sprawiedliwa in Polish, uczciwa beside it. Whatever a bearer makes of it, the origin holds: iustus, just and fair.
