Yuliia

Yuliia is the Ukrainian form of a name Rome gave to Europe. It descends from the Latin gens Julia, the family line that counted Julius Caesar among its members. Scholars link the name to the Latin word iuvenis, meaning young, and that is where the sense of youthful begins. In Poland the same root surfaces as Julia, the variant most people know, and as the diminutive Julka.

Julka is the everyday form. Spelled with the double i, Yuliia is how the name leaves Ukrainian, the romanization printed on passports and, more recently, written into Polish school class registers.

The Polish gloss adds promienista, radiant, a warmer reading that attached itself to the name well after Rome. That reading came later; the youthful one sits closer to the root. Julka on the register, Yuliia on the official form, one name still meaning young.
