Yağmur

Yağmur means rain. The word comes straight from Turkish, where yağmur is the everyday term for the water that falls from the sky. It is a Turkic word, sitting outside the Latin and Slavic families, and in Turkey it works as a given name for girls and boys alike.

Rain reads differently in a dry country than in a wet one. On the Anatolian plateau a downpour ends a drought and fills the wells, so the word for it turns readily into a name of welcome. Turkish families give Yağmur to daughters more often, though it stays open to sons.

For a Polish reader the dotted letter holds the surprise. In yağmur the ğ is soft. It stretches the vowel instead of making a hard sound, so the name runs closer to "ya-ur" than a Pole first expects. On an urząd form the diacritic may get dropped, leaving Yagmur. The meaning stays fixed all the same: rain, deszcz.
