What Vakhtangi means

Where Vakhtangi comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

The form Vakhtangi points east, to the Georgian name Vakhtang and the Iranian roots behind it. The short meaning given here is "wolf-bodied," from an Old Iranian compound of warka, wolf, and tanu, body. The origin is filed simply as other, outside the Slavic and Latin stock most Polish registers hold.

The name has a documented bearer. Vakhtang I of Iberia ruled in the fifth century and earned the byname Gorgasali, "wolf-head," after the wolf worked onto his helmet. He founded Tbilisi. Georgian tradition still counts him a saint.

Polish sources gloss the name as "panujący nad czasem," ruling over time. That reading came later. It sits over the wolf rather than under it, a softer sense laid on an older animal word.

A boy called Vakhtangi in a Polish class register would stand out at once. The final -i marks the Georgian form. Say it and you are naming a wolf.
