Tony

Tony is a short form of Anthony, and Anthony descends from the Roman family name Antonius. Antonius was a clan name in Rome, carried by politicians and generals, Mark Antony among them, centuries before it attached to any Christian saint. English speakers took Anthony, then clipped it. Tony is what was left.

The senses now hung on the name, priceless and praiseworthy, arrived long after the Latin did. Antonius itself has no settled meaning, and scholars trace it to Etruscan roots that stayed obscure. The flattering gloss came from a later link, sometimes drawn, to the Greek word anthos, meaning flower. So the praise was read into the name rather than born with it.

In English the name reads as plainly friendly, the sort that suits a colleague or a neighbour. On a Polish class register it would still be written Antoni, with Tony surfacing among friends. The pet form travels light. Whatever the paperwork says, the meaning people repeat stays the same: priceless, praiseworthy.
