Taisiya

A Greek name that reaches Poland through Russian use, still rare enough that most Poles have never met one. It goes only to girls, and the handful of births cluster in the 2020s: a name just now taking hold.

What Taisiya means

Where Taisiya comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Taisiya is the Russian form of an old Greek name, Thaïs. The oldest bearer we can name is Thaïs of Athens, a hetaira who followed Alexander the Great east. History records that she urged the burning of Persepolis in 330 BCE, then became the companion of Ptolemy, one of Alexander's generals. The name reaches Russia from Greek roots, not Slavic ones.

The short meaning given for Taisiya is "bandage," possibly from Greek. The sense stays uncertain. A second reading grew around the name in an Egyptian setting: "dedicated to Isis," goddess of old Egypt. That reading came later, from a different Thaïs, the repentant hermit honoured as a saint in the Coptic and Orthodox calendars. It was attached to the name, not present at its birth.

Russia kept the name alive while it faded elsewhere. It has no standard diminutive on the Polish list. A Polish child called Taisiya stands a little apart on the school register, one Greek name among the Zuzannas and Julias. The name stays close to its source: Taisiya, from Thaïs.
