Severyn

Severyn comes from the Latin *Severus*, the stern one, and keeps that meaning in its sound. Almost unknown in Poland, it is climbing: more boys got it last year than in most years before, always as the rarer cousin of `Seweryn`.

What Severyn means

Where Severyn comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Severyn comes from the Latin Severus, the stern one, the severe. Roman families gave the name as a promise of gravity, and it passed into the church through Saint Severinus of Noricum. The Polish form is `Seweryn`, and it turns feminine as `Seweryna`. The old meaning, surowy, srogi, sits in the sound before anyone explains it.

The Ukrainian tie runs through a real man. Severyn Nalyvaiko led a Cossack uprising from 1594 to 1596 across Right-Bank Ukraine and into Belarus ([Severyn Nalyvaiko](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Severyn_Nalyvaiko)). The Poles took him to Warsaw and executed him in 1597. Ukrainian folklore kept his name long after the beheading.

So the name holds two tempers. One is the Latin root that means stern. The other is a rebel who earned the sternness in the field.

On a Polish class register the name reads plainly next to `Seweryn`, its close cousin. A boy named Severyn carries a Roman adjective for severe.
