Serafina

From the Latin Seraphinus, the name of the seraphim, the burning ones: Serafina keeps that heat, the fiery one. Fewer than 300 Polish women use it, so most people here have never met one, and the few girls given it each year keep it just alight.

What Serafina means

Where Serafina comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Serafina reaches back to the Latin Seraphinus, the name of the seraphim, the highest order of angels. The seraphim were named as burning ones, and Serafina holds that reading. The old sense is fire. In English the name means the fiery, burning one, and that heat sits close to the surface.

Italy took to it early. Saint Serafina of San Gimignano, remembered on the twelfth of March, kept the name in Tuscan mouths long before it traveled north. The Italian ear heard it as soft and familiar, and it settled there as a saint's name.

Polish records hold a few faces of it. The variant Serafyma appears here and there, and the masculine Serafin stands beside it in the same parish book. Read a class register in Kraków today and Serafina still turns up, spelled plainly. The Polish gloss keeps the flame: płomienna, ognista.
