What Salome means

Where Salome comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Salome comes from Hebrew, from the root shalom, which means peace. In Polish that sense is pokój. The name traveled through the Greek New Testament, where a woman called Salome appears among those who came to the tomb, and it reached Poland in a fuller shape: Salomea.

Blessed Salomea of Poland gives the name a firm anchor. She was a thirteenth-century princess, the daughter of Leszek the White, and after a royal marriage she became a Poor Clare. Rome beatified her in 1672. Because of her, Salomea settled into Polish registers as a name with local history rather than a borrowed one.

Short. The two forms sit side by side. Salome keeps its biblical, cross-border shape, while Salomea reads as thoroughly Polish, the version a teacher might read out from a class register. Under both spellings the meaning holds steady: peace, pokój.
