Safiya

Safiya comes into Polish through Arabic, though its root is Hebrew. In Arabic the form Safiyya has long been read as pure, and Polish keeps that reading as czysta, nieskazitelna.

The name has a real bearer worth knowing. Safiyya bint Huyayy was born into a Jewish tribe of seventh-century Arabia and later married the Prophet Muhammad. In her the Hebrew origin and the Arabic association meet inside one recorded life, which is a rare thing for a single name to hold. Early Muslim chroniclers preserved her story, so this is documented rather than folk memory.

The meaning stayed close to the sound. Wherever Safiya turns up, whether on a class register in Białystok or a form at the urząd, it arrives already glossed as pure. No diminutive competes with it here, no Polish variant softens it. It stands as Safiya, plain and whole, meaning czysta.
