Romana

Romana comes from the Latin adjective Romanus, which meant Roman, belonging to the city of Rome. The short meaning keeps that sense plainly: rzymska, a woman of Rome. There is no riddle here, no buried second layer. The name stayed close to its source.

Beside it stands Roman, the masculine form that men have carried for centuries, and tucked inside it is Roma, a variant short enough to answer to across a room. All three lead back to one Latin word about one place. Early Christian calendars record saints named Romanus, and the feminine simply followed the masculine into use, as Latin feminines usually did.

Picture a Polish class register: a Romana listed a few lines above a Roman, the pair pointing, without anyone noticing, at the same ancient adjective. On her imieniny the connection is easy to forget, since a name-day feels like a private thing rather than a lesson in etymology.

That is the shape of it. The Latin root, the variant Roma, the cross-gender Roman, and a meaning that has barely moved in two thousand years: rzymska, from Rome.
