Roland

Roland comes from Germanic roots, pairing a word for fame with a word for land. The plain sense is famous land. Its best known bearer is the Frankish commander Roland, who died at the Roncevaux Pass in 778 and later became the hero of the medieval epic La Chanson de Roland.

That poem carried the name across Europe. For centuries a boy called Roland stood beside the memory of a warrior blowing his horn while the rear guard fell around him. The name came to mean courage that arrives too late to save the man, yet stays loud enough to be heard a thousand years on.

In a Polish class register the name now sits among more common ones, four letters and a clear stress on the first. Roland keeps its old meaning close: famous land, from the Germanic word for the ground a fighter once defended.
