What Parvana means

Where Parvana comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Parvana comes from Persian, where the word parvāneh means butterfly. That sense sits at the root, not a label added afterward. In Polish the meaning lands as motyl. The name belongs to the group marked simply as other origin, outside the Slavic and Latin lines that fill most Polish registers.

Persian poetry gave the butterfly a fixed part. It circles the flame and burns, an old image for love that gives itself completely. A child called Parvana holds that word without the fire.

Readers outside Iran met the name through fiction. Deborah Ellis published The Breadwinner in 2000, and her heroine is Parvana, a girl in Kabul who cuts her hair and works to feed her family. The 2017 animated film kept the name. A Polish teacher reading a class register would find no diminutive to fall back on, no Parvanka waiting. The name stands as it is, and it means butterfly.
