Pia

Pia comes straight from Latin. The adjective `pius`, in its feminine `pia`, meant dutiful toward the gods, toward family, toward Rome. The short meaning we hand it now, pious and dutiful, sits close to that root rather than beside it.

The name settled in Italy, then in German-speaking lands and across Scandinavia. Dante gave it a famous bearer in the Purgatorio, Pia de' Tolomei, a woman of Siena who asks the poet to remember her. Her line is brief. She names herself and asks to be recalled, and that request is most of what history keeps of her.

In a Polish class register Pia stands out by its length alone, three letters between longer entries. It takes no diminutive, and the list of related forms gives none. What stays is the Latin sense: `pia`, dutiful.
