Orfeusz

Orfeusz is the Polish form of Orpheus, and it comes from Greek. Scholars who chase its root often land on the word orphne, meaning the darkness of night. That link is proposed, not settled. It supplies the short meaning kept here, darkness of night, a sense attached to a root nobody has pinned down.

The name lives first in myth. Orpheus was the Thracian singer whose music stilled beasts and moved stones, and who went down into the underworld to reclaim Eurydice. He lost her by looking back. Pindar and later Greek poets already call him the father of song, so the name arrives carrying a musician before it carries a boy.

In a Polish class register, Orfeusz stands out among the Jakubs and Antonis, a single line that asks to be read twice. No name-day is marked for it in the calendar. What the child inherits is the Greek form itself, three syllables ending in the -eusz that Polish keeps for Odyseusz and Perseusz, and under them the old guess at darkness of night.
