Nikolina

Nikolina grows out of the Slavic name Nikola, taking the feminine ending that Polish and its neighbours hand to a name. The short meaning stays close to its parts: victory of the people. Those parts reach back to Greek, where nikē meant victory and laos meant the people, though the form Nikolina itself is Slavic, shaped in the mouths of speakers who kept Nikola in steady use.

The diminutive Nika trims it down. Two syllables, quick to call across a schoolyard. On a class register in Poland you might find Nikolina written in full, with Nika added in a teacher's shorthand beside it.

Nikola also stands on its own as a variant, worn by men across the Balkans and by women as well, which gives Nikolina a wide family to belong to. The meaning does real work here.
