Nicoletta

Nicoletta comes from Greek. It is the Italian feminine of Nicola, the southern form of the name English speakers know as Nicholas. Behind all of them stands Nikolaos, built from nikē, victory, and laos, the people. So the name reads, quite literally, as victory of the people, zwycięzca ludu in Polish.

Italy kept this name close, especially in the south and along the Adriatic, where devotion to Saint Nicholas of Bari ran deep. The bones of that fourth-century bishop have rested in Bari since 1087, and his feast falls on 6 December. A girl named Nicoletta inherits a thread back to him, and back to the older Greek word for the people who share in a victory.

In a Polish class register the name stands out among the Katarzynas and Magdas, three soft syllables of Italian air. It has no Polish diminutives of its own, no homegrown variants; it arrives whole, as Nicoletta. That completeness is part of its appeal.
