Mercedes

Behind Mercedes stands a Latin word about money. "Merces, mercedis" meant wages, hire, the reward you were owed. Christian Latin bent that sense toward grace, and the plural came to mean mercies. In Spanish those mercies belong to Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, Our Lady of Mercy. Her feast falls on 24 September.

The devotion has a concrete history. In 1218 the Mercedarian order formed in Barcelona to ransom Christians held captive across the Mediterranean. Mercy here meant a paid release, close to the old Latin sense of merces. A girl named Mercedes carried the plural of that idea, the mercies rather than a single act.

The name stayed Spanish and stayed feminine. It has no diminutive line and no male twin on the Polish register. In Poland it reads as foreign, marked as Spanish the moment a teacher calls it out in a class register. The English gloss is plain: mercies. In Polish, łaski, miłosierdzie.
