Marisa

Marisa reaches Italian and Spanish speakers through Latin. The Latin word for the sea is mare, and its genitive maris sits under the name. That root is where the short meaning, "of the sea," attaches. The sense arrived as an association, pulled toward the sound of maris after the name was already in use.

In Italy and Spain, Marisa settled as a form of its own. It kept no diminutive that tradition handed down, so the full name does all the work. Marisa stands alone. The same Latin mare survives in Italian mare and Spanish mar, so the sea is never far from the name's family.

On a Polish class register, Marisa lands between Maria and Marta. At the urząd an official writes it in full, with no shorter version to reach for. The meaning holds in Polish too: morze, morska, of the sea.
