Mariam

Mariam comes from the Hebrew Miryam, and its short meaning has long been read two ways: bitter, or a drop of the sea. The Latin path gave Europe Maria, while this older form kept its second vowel and traveled a different road. In Arabic that shape became Maryam, the name the Quran gives to the mother of Jesus. She is the only woman named directly in that book, and its nineteenth sura carries her name.

So Mariam sits at a crossing between two traditions. A Hebrew root, an Arabic association. On a Polish class register the name looks foreign and familiar at once, close to the Maria in the next row yet spelled its own way.

The meaning stays double. "Bitter" and "drop of the sea" descend from the same uncertain root, and scholars have never fully settled which came first. Polish keeps the water in view with gorzkie morze, bitter sea. A child called Mariam holds the older Semitic form, the one that existed before Latin smoothed it into Maria.
