Marat

At root it means "desired, wished for". The name barely registers in Poland, carried by only a few hundred men, yet it's slowly climbing: a few boys get it each year now, after two decades of almost none.

What Marat means

Where Marat comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Marat travels under two histories. Among Tatar and Bashkir families it stands close to Murat and Murad, names from the Arabic murād, "desired, wished for," and that sense of the wished-for child gives Marat its short meaning: upragniony, the one hoped for. The origin is filed simply as other, since the name refuses a single tidy root.

The Russian story is different. After the French Revolution, the figure of Jean-Paul Marat (1743-1793) entered Soviet naming, and the name was given to sons in honor of a revolutionary hero rather than for any meaning.

So a boy called Marat might hold a Turkic meaning and a French surname at once. One of the best-known bearers is the tennis player Marat Safin, born in Moscow in 1980 to a Tatar family, a former world number one. On a Polish class register the name reads as foreign, and it is. It has no Polish diminutive of its own. What it keeps, wherever it lands, is the old sense underneath: desired.
