Ludwina

Ludwina is Germanic to the bone, assembled from two old elements: leud, meaning people or nation, and wini, meaning friend. Read straight, the name says friend of the people. The root is loyalty. That is a claim about whose side a person stands on, not a decoration added afterward.

It helps to keep Ludwina apart from the more familiar Ludwik. They sound like cousins, yet Ludwik grows from different roots, the ones for fame and war. Ludwina belongs to the older pairing of people and friend, and that pairing gives the short meaning, przyjaciółka ludu.

A near form of the name walked through real history. Lidwina of Schiedam, born around 1380 in the Low Countries and dead by 1433, spent most of her life bedbound and became one of the medieval church's documented mystics, later named patron of the chronically ill and of skaters. On a Polish class register today the name looks plain enough. Behind the plainness sits leud and wini, friend of the people.
