Louise

Louise is the French feminine form of Louis. Both go back to the old Germanic name Hlodwig, made from hlut, meaning loud or famous, and wig, meaning war. The parts spell loud and war.

Those roots give the sense recorded here: renowned warrior. The name traveled with the French court and reached English speakers through it. English kept a Latin-flavored cousin, Louisa, beside Louise itself. The Polish cognate is Ludwika, feminine of Ludwik, the same Frankish royal name that produced the long line of French kings called Louis.

Real women filled the name with their own record. Louise Michel, a schoolteacher, fought in the Paris Commune of 1871 and was deported to New Caledonia for it. Louise Bourgeois, born in Paris in 1911, built towering steel spiders and worked until she was ninety-eight. Neither life reads as soft.

A Polish child entered as Louise at the urząd carries a French spelling over a Germanic root. The root still means war.
