Laurent is the French form of the Latin Laurentius. Behind it stands Laurentum, an ancient town in Latium, and the Latin word laurus, the laurel tree. The plainest reading of the name is therefore "from Laurentum, laurel." The laurel meant victory to Rome.
The wreath handed to winning generals and honoured poets came from that same tree, and a sense of triumph settled onto a name that began as a marker of place. Saint Lawrence of Rome, a deacon martyred in 258, carried the Latin form outward, and much of Europe kept a version of it. In Poland the saint became Wawrzyniec, and his name-day falls on 10 August.
French smoothed the ending into Laurent, closer to the sound a modern ear expects. On a Polish urząd form the name reads as foreign, French rather than local. The words behind its meaning, wawrzyn and laur, still name the same evergreen leaf.
