The masculine form Leonard settled into common use first, and Leonarda stands beside it as the feminine version.
The lion did most of the work in how people heard this name. A woman called Leonarda carried a creature of courage in what she was called. Saint Leonard of Noblac, honoured in Poland on 6 November, gave the male form a name-day and a patron for prisoners and for women in childbirth.
