Kiejstut comes from Lithuanian, and its root is the verb kęsti, to endure or to suffer. From that verb the Lithuanian form Kęstutis was built, and Polish chroniclers wrote it as Kiejstut. The short meaning follows the root directly: patient, enduring.
One man fixed the name in Polish memory. Kiejstut, or Kęstutis, was Grand Duke of Lithuania in the fourteenth century, brother of Olgierd and father of Witold. He ruled from Trakai and defended it for decades. He was captured by his nephew Jogaila, imprisoned at Krewo, and died there in 1382. His life gave the name a bearer who matched its meaning.
The name is rare now in Poland. A boy called Kiejstut carries something old. On an official form at the urząd the name stands out at once. It points back to a duke, and back to kęsti, the verb for enduring.
