Karen

Rare enough that most Poles have never met one, and unusual for splitting almost evenly between women and men: genuinely unisex. From Greek, carrying the sense of "pure".

What Karen means

Where Karen comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Karen travelled north before it reached Poland. The name began as Katherine, and Katherine goes back to the Greek Aikaterine. Danish and Norwegian speakers clipped that long name down to Karen, and it settled there as a name of its own.

The sense of 'pure' was attached later. It grew from a resemblance to the Greek word katharos, meaning clean or pure, and generations read that meaning back into the name. In Polish the same idea comes out as czysta.

English-speaking countries took up Karen in the twentieth century, and for decades it ranked among the common choices for girls. A Karen in a Kraków class register today wears a name with Scandinavian roots and a Greek grandmother. Say it once. The vowels stay short and plain, close to the Danish way of sounding it. What stays, underneath the fashions, is the old promise of czysta, pure.
