Justin

The name Justin traces back to the Latin iustus, meaning just or righteous. Romans built the fuller form Iustinus from that adjective, and it is the root beneath the modern name.

One early bearer gives the name its ballast. Justin Martyr, a philosopher of the second century, defended his young faith in writing and was killed for it. A little later Justin I rose from a peasant household to rule as a Byzantine emperor. Both men wore a name built on the idea of fairness.

Today Justin reads as thoroughly English, familiar from pop songs and screens across the English-speaking world. On a Polish class register it sits among more local names, its spelling left alone. The meaning stays near the surface. What the Latin offered was plain: sprawiedliwy, prawy, just and righteous.
