What Josephine means

Where Josephine comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Josephine reaches Polish ears dressed in English, though its root runs back to Hebrew. It grows from Yosef, a name that meant "God increases," in Polish "Bóg przydał." The increase there is a plain one, a child added to a household. Napoleon's empress wore the French form, and from her court the English Josephine spread across the map.

Poland keeps the same seed in its own soil. Here the variants are Józefina and Józefa, the men who share the root are called Józef, and the fond short form is Ziuta.

The name has a documented history. Josephine Baker, born in St. Louis in 1906, made it famous on the Paris stage and later carried a French passport. On a Polish class register the entry would read differently. A teacher calls out Józefina, and a girl answers, though her grandmother at home says only Ziuta. The meaning underneath stays fixed: God adds.
