Jennifer

A Celtic name at root, read as "the fair one," literally a "white phantom." In Poland it stays foreign and scarce: most people here have never met one, and the few girls given it each year keep dwindling.

Meaning & Origin

What Jennifer means

Where Jennifer comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

The name Jennifer began in Cornwall, at the far Celtic edge of Britain, as a local form of Guinevere. Behind both stands the Welsh Gwenhwyfar, built from gwen, meaning "white" or "fair," and a second element pointing toward a phantom or a soft, smooth shape. The old sense reads as white phantom, the fair one. Its roots are Celtic. King Arthur's queen carried the Welsh version long before English speakers thought the name ordinary.

For centuries Jennifer stayed a Cornish name and little else. Then George Bernard Shaw gave it to a character in his 1906 play The Doctor's Dilemma, and the wider English-speaking world took notice. By the middle of the twentieth century it had climbed to the top of the American charts.

That fair one at the root has no Polish twin and no tidy diminutive. A Polish teacher reading it from a class register meets it whole, biały duch, biała czarodziejka, with nothing to shorten.
