What Inés means

Where Inés comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Inés is the Spanish form of Agnes, and its root is Latin. Behind the Latin lies Greek hagnē, meaning chaste, pure, holy. Latin carried it as Agnes, and Spanish softened the sound into Inés. The short meaning holds to that first sense.

Early Latin speakers heard agnus, the lamb, inside Agnes. That link came later. It was an association, not the origin, yet it stuck, and Saint Agnes of Rome became a patron whose feast falls on 21 January. Spanish honours her as Santa Inés.

The name found a second life in Spanish story. Inés de Castro, loved by the future king Pedro of Portugal, died in the fourteenth century and was mourned long after. José Zorrilla gave the stage a Doña Inés in his play Don Juan Tenorio. Picture the name today on a class register at a Kraków school, one Inés among the Zuzannas. The sense it carries is short and old: pure.
