What Heronima means

Where Heronima comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Heronima reached Polish through Latin, from the form Hieronymus. That Latin name had itself gathered up two older Greek pieces, one meaning sacred, the other meaning name. So the whole reads as sacred name, święte imię, a title before it settled on any one person.

The masculine partner is Hieronim, borne by Saint Jerome, the scholar who rendered the Bible into Latin around the year 400. The variant Hieronima keeps the older spelling with its opening h, while Heronima lets that h fall away. Both grow from the same root.

Few Polish girls carry it now.

On a class register it would stand alone, and its name-day sits beside Hieronim on the thirtieth of September. Whoever holds it shares her imieniny with a man remembered for patient work over words. The sense holds under either spelling: święte imię, a sacred name.
