Huyen

Huyền comes from Vietnamese, where it names a color. The word points to jet black, the deep black of lacquer or of long hair. Its short meaning runs black, dark, mysterious. In Vietnamese that same word, huyền, also labels a mark of writing, the grave accent called dấu huyền that pulls a syllable downward in tone.

That gives the name two lives. One is color, the black that Vietnamese poems reach for when they praise long dark hair. The other is grammar, a small stroke above a vowel.

In Poland the name travels with the Vietnamese community, one of the largest in the country. A girl named Huyền may appear on a class register in Warsaw between a Zuzanna and an Oliwia. The spelling holds a y and an ê that Polish does not use. Both point back to one Vietnamese word for black.
