What Geoffrey means

Where Geoffrey comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Geoffrey came into England with the Normans, a Germanic name that Old French had already reshaped into Geoffroi. Its final part goes back to Germanic frid, meaning peace, and medieval readers took it further as God's peace. The first element stayed uncertain. Scholars still argue over it, so the sense that held on was the one nobody disputed.

The name sits at the start of English literature. Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales in the 1380s, and school anthologies have kept his first name in print ever since. Earlier still, Geoffrey of Monmouth compiled his history of the British kings around 1136 and handed Europe much of its Arthur.

Geoffrey has no Polish diminutive and no imieniny in the Polish calendar. On a class register in Kraków it would read as plainly foreign, an English import among the Kubas and Zosias. What the name brought with it stays legible anyway: from that old Germanic frid, peace.
