The name became English through a saint. George of Lydda, the soldier said to have killed a dragon, was made patron of England, and his red cross still marks the English flag. Six kings have taken the name in turn, the last of them George VI, reigning until 1952. His feast, and so the name-day, falls on 23 April.
Fame like that could have buried the old meaning. It did not. The soil came first. Whatever crown or cross the name gathered later, a George stays, by origin, a farmer of the earth.
