Eulalia

Eulalia comes from Greek, joining eu, "well" or "good," to a root for speaking. Read together, the parts mean "sweetly-speaking," or in Polish dobrze mówiąca. The same eu opens Eugenia and Eufemia, so anyone who has met those names has already met half of this one.

The earliest famous bearer was Saint Eulalia of Mérida, a young Christian killed in Roman Hispania around the year 304. Her story spread far. She is the subject of the Sequence of Saint Eulalia, composed near 881 and counted among the oldest surviving texts written in an early form of French. A name meaning "good speech" ended up fixed in the first stirrings of a literary language. That is a fitting turn.

In Poland the name is uncommon, which makes it easy to spot. A child called Eulalia will likely be the only one in the class register, and her imieniny fall on 12 February. There is no standard diminutive waiting for her, no ready short form on the calendar. What stays is the plain sense the Greek gives: someone who speaks well, dobrze mówiąca.
