What Emanuele means

Where Emanuele comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

The name Emanuele carries a message rather than a description. It comes from Hebrew Immanuel, ‘Immanu El, and means God is with us, a phrase first set down in the book of Isaiah as a sign given to a frightened king. Italy took the name in and softened its ending into the open vowel that Italian speech prefers.

The variant Emanuel spread into Polish and Portuguese, while the feminine Emanuela answered for daughters. Italy also fixed the name in its royal house. Vittorio Emanuele II became the first king of a united Italy in 1861, and two later kings of that dynasty carried Emanuele in their names as well.

The meaning never moved. Whether a boy signs Emanuele on a form at the urząd or a girl writes Emanuela in a class register, the old Hebrew sentence still stands behind it: God is with us.
