What Elizabet means

Where Elizabet comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Elizabet reaches back to the Hebrew Elisheva, and its short meaning is plain: my god is an oath. The name binds a person to a promise sworn before God. In Poland the form hardened into `Elżbieta`, and everyday speech softened it again into `Ela` and `Elka`.

One bearer fixed the name in Christian memory. Luke's Gospel names Elżbieta as the mother of John the Baptist. Centuries later Elżbieta Węgierska, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, gave Polish calendars a name-day on 19 November. She died at twenty-four, known for feeding the poor.

A teacher reads Elżbieta from the class register. The girl answers with Ela. Both name the same oath, one formal, one worn smooth by use. The full form waits on the birth certificate at the urząd. My god is an oath.
