What Dezydery means

Where Dezydery comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Dezydery begins in Latin. The source word is desideratus, longed-for or desired, from the verb desiderare, to long for. That meaning survives in the Polish gloss, upragniony.

The Latin name Desiderius belonged to real people. One was the last king of the Lombards, deposed by Charlemagne in 774. Poland took the name later, through the Church and its Latin, and settled on the spelling Dezydery.

The same root branched across languages. It became Désiré in French and Desiderio in Italian. The feminine variant Dezyderia keeps the Polish form and the same origin.

It stays rare. On a Polish class register, a Dezydery sits apart from the Jakubs and Szymons. The spelling still points home, to desideratus, the desired one, upragniony.
