The name Czcibor is built from two Old Slavic roots. The first, czci-, comes from cześć, meaning honor or reverence. The second, -bor, means to fight or to do battle. Put together they give the meaning still attached to the name: fight for honor, walczący o cześć.
That meaning found a real bearer early. Czcibor was the younger brother of Mieszko I, and in June 972 he commanded part of the Polish forces at the Battle of Cedynia. Hidden in the hills, his men struck the flank of Margrave Hodon's army and turned the day. The chronicler Thietmar of Merseburg recorded the victory, which makes Cedynia the first battle in Polish history with a written account. So the meaning and the man line up.
The name wore down over the centuries. Its common variant is Ścibor, softer to say and easier to carry into surnames and place names.
Today Czcibor is rare. A child who has it will likely be the only one on the class register. The roots stay legible, though: cześć and bor, honor and the fight for it.
