What Ścibor means
Where Ścibor comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Ścibor is an Old Polish name built from two Slavic roots. The first, related to cześć, means honor. The second, the element -bor, means to fight or to struggle. Put together they give the reading recorded for the name: fighting for honor, walczący o cześć. The older, fuller form was `Czcibor`, and you still meet it in registers of medieval names.
The name has a documented bearer of real weight. Ścibor ze Ściborzyc lived from about 1347 to 1414. He rose in the Kingdom of Hungary as voivode of Transylvania and trusted man of King Sigismund of Luxembourg. Chronicles credit him with dozens of castles along the Váh. A Polish name, then, that carried far past Poland's borders.
The compound structure marks Ścibor as old Slavic stock, the same pattern that gives us Bor in `Bor`isław and cześć in `Cz`cibor. Today it sits on the rare end of the register. Read it on a class list and it points back to that root pair: honor and the fight for it.
