Catalina comes into Polish through Spanish, where it is the everyday form of the name that Poland knows as Katarzyna. Both trace back through the Latin Catharina to an older Greek source. The meaning "pure" was fastened on later, by association with the Greek word katharos, so the sense of cleanliness is a story told about the name rather than its first root.
The Spanish carried Catalina far. Catalina de Aragón, born in 1485, became a queen of England and signed her letters Katharine. The name traveled by sea as well, and an island off California still holds it.
