Bogusz

Bogusz comes from Slavic roots, built from the element "Bogu-", meaning God, joined to a second piece tied to "sław", glory. Put together it reads as "sławiący boga", one who gives glory to God. The name works as a shortened form of the older Bogusław, the way a long compound gets worn down to something brisker in daily speech.

For centuries these Bogu- names belonged to Polish nobility and clergy, so the meaning stayed close to the surface. A boy called Bogusz carried a small confession of faith in his own name. The imieniny fall on 24 February, the one day a year the name holds its own place on the calendar.

Today Bogusz is uncommon. Read a school register in Poland and you will meet Kacpers and Szymons long before a Bogusz turns up. That rarity lends it a certain plainness. When someone does bear it, the sense of "glory of god" sits right there in the two Slavic pieces that make it, Bogu and sław.
