Benon

Benon grew from Slavic roots, and Polish tradition reads it as a good wish. The old sense points two ways at once, toward dobry, good, and toward dobroczyńca, a benefactor, a person whose goodness reaches other people. A boy called Benon holds both. That is a lot to ask of one short word.

Benona is its cross-gender form, the same meaning turned toward a girl. The pair is neat. Where Benon names a boy, Benona names a woman, and the promise stays the same on either side.

Picture a class register in a Polish school, the surnames alphabetical, and near the top a single Benon among far more common names. The teacher reads it once and remembers it. On his imieniny the name stands on its own, rare enough to notice, plain enough to say. And the meaning underneath has not moved: dobry, good.
