Balladyna

The short meaning of Balladyna points to the word "ballad," and that word has a long backstory. English "ballad" came through Old French from Provençal balada, a song for dancing. Juliusz Słowacki coined Balladyna as the title of his 1839 tragedy, shaping it from ballada, the Romantic genre of strange deeds and blurred lines between the real and the uncanny. His Balladyna is a poor village girl whose ambition drives her to a chain of crimes.

That literary weight follows the name. A child called Balladyna today shares a page in the school register with a queen from a set text. There are no standard diminutives on record and no separate name-day, which leaves the full form doing all the work. Balladyna keeps its Greek dancing root and its meaning, from "ballad."
