What Artemiusz means

Where Artemiusz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Artemiusz begins in Greek, in the name Artemios, built on the goddess Artemis. The short meaning is plain: belonging to Artemis, in Polish poświęcony bogini Artemidzie. Artemis ruled the hunt and the country beyond the city walls. A child took her sign.

The name then travelled a long way from the forest. Saint Artemius was a Roman military commander who died in 362, under the emperor Julian. He was beheaded for refusing to renounce his Christian faith, and the Eastern Church honours him as a great-martyr with a feast on 20 October. One goddess of the wilds, one Christian soldier, both standing behind the same word.

In Polish the form holds as Artemiusz. Read it off a class register and it runs four syllables long, above the Jans and Piotrs around it. The meaning stays fixed to the goddess: belonging to Artemis.
