Asteria

Greek at root, from a word meaning "of the stars": starry. Barely two dozen women in Poland carry it, so most Poles will never meet one and the few births have all but stopped.

What Asteria means

Where Asteria comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Asteria begins with the Greek word aster, meaning star. The name itself means of the stars, or starry. Here the meaning is literal, present from the start. The same root gives us the aster flower, the asterisk, and the word astronomy.

In Greek myth, Asteria was a Titaness, a daughter of Coeus and Phoebe. Her sister was Leto, mother of Apollo and Artemis. Ancient writers linked her to falling stars and to oracles read by night. Fleeing Zeus, she turned into a quail, then into the island later known as Delos.

It is rare. On a Polish class register, Asteria sits oddly beside Zofia and Maria. The name has no Polish diminutive in common use, so it stays whole: Asteria, the starry one.
