Asia

Asia begins as a shortening. Polish takes Joanna, the fuller name, and wears it down to two easy syllables, then treats the short form as a name in its own right. The meaning underneath does not change: god is gracious, bóg jest łaskawy. That sense belongs first to Joanna and reaches Asia through the family it comes from.

The form itself is Slavic, a diminutive shaped on Polish soil, with a relative to the south and east in the variant Ioana. English readers stumble over the spelling, since it matches the name of the continent, yet the Polish si softens to a hush, so the girl called Asia sounds nearer to "Asha" than to any map.
