Alfreda

Alfreda grows from Germanic soil, the same ground that produced the Old English name Ælfræd. Two small words sit inside it: ælf, an elf, and ræd, counsel or advice. Put together, they give the short meaning, elf counsel. The wisdom here was imagined as advice from beyond the ordinary, something a spirit might offer.

Alfred is the masculine form, and Alfreda answers it across the line of gender. The best known Alfred is Alfred the Great, the ninth-century king of Wessex who fought off Viking armies and revived learning in his realm. A woman named Alfreda stands beside that history without needing the crown.

In a Polish class register, Alfreda would land among names far more common, an older choice with a firm shape. The parts are old. What stays legible is the pair of Germanic words, ælf and ræd, elf and counsel.
