Angela

Angela grows from the Greek word angelos, which meant a messenger, someone sent to carry news. Early Greek writers used it for ordinary couriers before the word settled into the sense of a divine messenger, an angel. The short meaning we give the name today, angel, messenger of god, comes from that second life of the word.

In Polish the name has a close relative, Aniela, which took the same root and made it fully at home in the language. A girl named Angela and a girl named Aniela share an ancestor. On a school register the two forms can sit a few lines apart, both tracing back to angelos.

The angelic sense arrived later than the plain one. What began as a job, carrying a message, became a winged figure with a task from God. Angela holds both readings at once. Its short meaning in Polish, anielska, posłaniec, keeps the messenger visible next to the angel.
